Excerpts of Reviews

“This fair and informative book on the Waffen-SS cannot be highly enough praised. Conceived as an encyclopaedia it is of outstanding use for reference. The overview of all Waffen-SS units is exhaustive and singular in that regard. Each division’s description is clear and concise, as well as the short biographies of a selection of the Waffen-SS leaders. Throughout, Rikmenspoel’s tone is dispassionate, and his portraits are balanced. The main strength of the book is its impartiality toward a subject that has seldom found a just appraisal in post-war literature, the least in Germany itself. Obviously, his fairness toward the Waffen-SS doesn’t result from a special liking for the Waffen-SS but rather from his exceptionally thorough research in this field. Often his comprehension is astonishingly up to date. For instance, he doesn't ascribe the destruction of the town of Rovaniemi in the north of Finland to the alleged scorched-earth tactics of the 6th SS-Mountain Division but - in accordance with the facts revealed only after 1990 - to the sabotage act of a Finnish commando. It adds to the quality of the book that Rikmenspoel points to several issues that still need serious research. I believe that this book will soon rank among the leading standard works on the Waffen-SS. A German translation is an urgent desiteratum.”

—Johann Voss, Author of Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS

“Rikmenspoel’s work is one of the best efforts around on the SS...For a single volume reference work on the SS, this is probably the best book to put on your shelf.”

“Few units arouse such intense interest as the Waffen-SS: love them or hate them, the Waffen-SS has had more books printed about them then probably any other unit. Unfortunately, some of them are more about the ‘SS cult fetish’ then tangible information. Thankfully, Marc Rikmenspoel has supplied us with a one-stop reference tool worth its spot on the bookshelf.”

Broadsword Military Magazine

“This thoroughly researched and well-written study is an indispensable reference book for anyone interested in the Second World War.”
